This short part of our row is the garden smoothie section. The Swiss chard and kale are both doing well in the garden, I like to call it the smoothie section of the garden. A couple times a day I go out and clip some of each. I take it right inside to the little blender to make one of my favorite smoothies.
It is getting ahead of me and is going to need pruning soon. If I can’t find someone to take what we prune then it will go into the freezer.
Preserving kale and Swiss chard by blanching
When there is an over abundance of of the kale and Swiss chard we bring it inside and give it a good rinse. After blanching it in our 16 quart stockpot it will get dunked in cold ice water. Excess water is strained and then placed in freezer bags. The kale get used more often during the cold months in stews at our house, but they work well frozen in smoothies too.
Planning a fall smoothie section of the garden
With the fall season approaching it is time plan our fall garden. Part of that fall garden is going to be grown under mini hoops to extend our season. A section of that will be dedicated for our garden smoothie section.
In addition to the chard and kale currently growing we will be adding two varieties of beets and another type of kale.
My favorite kale smoothie recipe with bananas and blueberries
One of my favorite smoothie recipe is also a simple one. We use various green from out garden, I’ve even got a section just for this we call the smoothie section. My go to green leafy vegetable is usually kale.
I’m beginning the process of eating healthier. As part of that process I try to add one or two kale smoothies to my meals daily. I’ve borrowed bits and pieces from various kale smoothie recipes found online to end up with my go to recipe. Because I prefer a really cold smoothie the fruit I use is always frozen.
My favorite kale smoothie recipe
For this recipe I use half a frozen banana, approximately half a cup of frozen blue berries, one half cup of vanilla Greek yogurt and two large kale leaves. Milk is used to fill the blender container for our NutriBullet to the fill line. Blend thoroughly and enjoy!
The NutriBullet is necessary. And to be honest if we hadn’t received one as a gift I don’t think I would have one at all. With that said I really like it for this task because it helps cut down on my messes and the dishes I get dirty. Everything goes in the cup, the blender head screwed on and then its blended. Screw off the blender head, clean it up and then drink right from the cup!
Today We made it out into the garden to harvest kale. It was a muddy mess but we’ve got a mess a fresh kale ready to start putting in the freezer. The 3 inches of rain we received in 24 hours made a muddy mess but didn’t damage the crops in the raised Mittlieder beds.
We’ve been enjoying fresh kale on our sandwiches for lunch the past few days. It has been amazing. It’s far enough along now that we can harvest a mess of it for an actual meal. We’ve discussed a white beans and kale but haven’t decided. Kale is in the grow bed on the left.
